In my most recent post, I posited that for the Internet of Things to truly come into its own, app designers will need to take the reigns away from industrial designers. I also mentioned that in order for this to happen, there needs to be a single, interconnected platform.

HomeKit should be that platform, or at least be a step in the right direction. The fact that Apple is making an attempt at it should feed right into bringing app developers & designers into the space. I have some reservations about the actual platform itself not being more agnostic (in a this instance, Apple’s tendency towards closed-ness worries me), but I think as a jumpstart, we couldn’t ask for more. Really excited to see where this goes.
